Day 271 Synchronicity

September 6, 2015

(If we live with an open and grateful attitude, every day will bring a gift. This is one of 365 gifts during the year I turned 70.)

While stopped at a red light in Baltimore, I looked up to see a narrow contrail paralleling the steeple of Seventh Metro Church with the sun behind it. What are the chances of this confluence happening? Probably quite slim.

First, there must be a red light stop and I must be in the passenger’s seat with my cell phone at the ready. Then it must be sunny and at the right time of the day for the sun’s position to be behind the steeple. Finally, there must be the correct amount of moisture at high altitude for the plane to leave a contrail and the plane’s schedule must be in synch with all these elements.

It is a confluence of persistence. A contrail is a human-induced cloud and the thin variety is a persistent one—non-spreading—possible because there was a limited supply of moisture in the air. A steeple is a human structure that represents a persistent faith. And over the years, I’ve had a persistent eye, observing my environment and the way things come together.
My gift today is confluence of persistence.
